Your personal police can cover your building, contents, vehicles and public liability.
BuildingsThe cover is known as House Owners Insurance, designed to cover your private residence. You need to insure your property at current replacement values. Some insurance companies do offer the service of a professional valuator, in order to avoid any underinsurance. A liability for the property is normally included in this section. ContentsYour contents have to be insured at the current replacement cost. This means that although your contents are used, they will be replaced with new goods should they get lost or damaged. Please make sure that the sum insured therefore reflects the value as if everything had to be purchased new again. The sum insured must include all movable assets. Do not forget your personal effects, jewellery, items in the garage, groceries, the wine cellar etc. etc. You can also have a valuation done by independent experts if you are not certain on the total replacement value. If you have not insured at replacement cost you are underinsured and a possible claim will therefore not be settled in full. If you take out this section, the public liability is automatically included. All RiskShould you wish to insure items that are normally outside your residence or that you take with you, the cover can be obtained under this section. The cover is for goods such as jewellery, watches, sports equipment, travel items etc. You can select an overall limit (i.e. R 10’000). Certain items always have to be specified, like mobile phones, bicycles, contact lenses, caravan contents etc. MotorYour
vehicle, if new, is insured for replacement during the first year.
Thereafter the retail value is applied. These values can be obtained
from the Auto Dealer’s Guide booklet if the car is not imported or
older than 9 years. All type of vehicles (cars, LDVs, motorbikes, golfcarts etc.) can be covered under this section. There are 3 levels of insurance cover available:
The
government’s “Road Accident Fund” provides the cover for
personal damages. Any material damage is covered by your insurance
policy under a comprehensive policy.
Public liabilityThis section covers you and your family if material damage or personal injury is caused towards a third party. Claim-free group or no-claim-bonus Most insurance companies will accept your previous loss history and adjust their insurance policy accordingly. Please make sure that you give us proof of previous insurance so that we can reduce your premium accordingly. Excess, first amount payable or deductible Most insurance policies carry excess that is the first amount of each claim a policyholder has to pay. Most retired people are offered policies without any deductibles. The excess may be compulsory but the policyholder can select a voluntary excess. Underinsurance Also called “average” means that the insured has not got adequate insurance cover as the replacement value exceeds the current sum insured. The insurer would only settle a claim pro-rata. QuotationsWould you like to receive independant insurance quotations or compare with your existing policy? |
